| Seismo-Watch Special Earthquake Report Lavic Lake (Hector Mine) M7.1 Earthquake Photos |
The excursion to retrieve some of these photographs occurred on a day when military exercises had been suspended. There were no base boundary advisory signs posted on the dirt road which was taken to access the fault ruptures, yet once there, it was clear of the operations at hand and the potential hazard. A few photographs were taken and then the reconnaissance was terminated. In respect to the U.S. Marine Corps, the ongoing geologic studies by the authorized geologic investigators, and your own personal safety, do not go on the base. The Marines have been gracious thus far and the geoscientists would be appreciative of their continued hospitality.
Below are six sets of photos and a page with additonal links. We apologize, but there are no captions to the photos at this time.

SPECIAL NOTICE: The earthquake occurred along the previously unnamed Lavic Lake Fault and has produced spectacular fault ruptures, all of which occurred within the 29 Palms U.S. Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center. Access to the Base is restricted and not advised due to active military operations using live rounds. In addition, the area is scattered with ordinances which may have not detonated. It is an extremely hazardous environment and not advised for casual reconnaissance.
