Notations:

Seismo-Watch has received information that "an earthquake registering a preliminary magnitude of Ms 7.3, Mw 7.1 was detected by the National Earthquake Information Center (NEIC) at 16:57:20 UTC, November 12, in northwestern Turkey."

"The quake was centered in the town of Duzce some 125 miles east of Istanbul and about 70 miles east of the M7.4 shock on August 17 which occurred killed over 17,000 people and injured another 50,000."

"The focal point was fixed at a depth of 10 km beneath the surface and the fault plane solution from Harvard Seismological Laboratory indicated predominantly strike-slip motion along a generally east west trending plane with a slight oblique component. The main shock has been followed a robust aftershock sequence which has included half dozen events in the M5 range. "

"Preliminary reports indicate at least 17 people have been killed and hundreds were injured. The Causality rate is expected to rise as a further evaluation has been made. Several buildings have collapsed and fires have broken out. Rescue workers from the Turkish government and surrounding nations, including the United States, have been dispatched to the area. "

The quake occurred along the North Anatolian Fault, a prominent geologic structure which extends for over 800 miles through northern Turkey. A M5.7 temblor triggered yesterday to the west in the Izmit earthquake aftershock zone."

Update: 2:00 p.m., November 12, 1999.
