More Special Earthquake Reports

Preliminary data indicates that a vigorous earthquake swarm occurred today south of the California-Mexico border in southern Mexicali Valley and in the Colorado Delta region.

According to the Southern California Seismic Network (SCSN), the swarm began about 9:30 a.m. and has consisted of at least 45 quakes measuring M2.0 or stronger, including 17 in the M3 range. The largest earthquake measured M3.6 and occurred at 8:24 p.m. (See list below)

The swarm tapered off by mid evening hours and no action has been reported since.

Subscribers to the Seismo-Watch EQ Flash! Alert Bulletins received a notifications within minutes of earthquakes measuring M3+.

Most off the activity is centered along the southern extent of the Imperial Valley fault zone, just before it crosses the Colorado River. Some of the action occurred a little further south in the Colorado Delta region and are too far south to be shown on the TriNet earthquake maps. Data processing for the action in Mexico will not be completed for some time, making the true extent of the swarm unknown till then.

There have been no reports of damage or injuries at this time.

Earthquake activity along this portion of the Imperial fault has been elevated ever since a M5.7 earthquake struck the Colorado Delta on December 8.
