| SAN CLEMENTE M4.4 EARTHQUAKE REPORT (Continued, Page 3) Since detailed monitoring of Southern California began in 1930s, there have been 19 earthquakes measuring M4.0 or stronger. See lists of M3+ quakes and M4+ quakes. Two quakes have registered in the M5 range, both happening about five decades ago: a M5.3 on February 24, 1948, and a M5.9 on Christmas Day, 1951. The 1951 event caused some minor damage from Long Beach to San Diego, such as cracked walls, broken windows and loss to minor retail items at stores. For years it was referred to as the "Christmas Day earthquake". Another Christmas Day temblor in Southern California was the 1899 San Jacinto M6.4 earthquake.
