    INCLINE, NEVADA, July 7, 2001 (Seismo-Watch) -- Preliminary data indicates that an earthquake measuring M3.3 (NCSN) occurred at 07:33:54 UTC (12:33 a.m. local time), July 7 about 11 miles east of Truckee, 15 miles southwest of Reno and 8 miles north of Incline along the California-Nevada border, but was too weak to topple any items from tables or shelves.

    A preliminary location indicates the quake was centered just inside the Nevada state line eight miles north of Incline in upper Grays Creek drainage. See a Topo Zone location map. This area was heavily burned in the Martis fire in late June.

    Foreshocks and aftershocks
    Three aftershock were detected within the following 13 minutes, the largest of which measured

    Felt Reports
    The temblor was felt by many people in the region most of which were still awake enjoying the midnight mountain air, but some who were jarred from sleep. One resident in Truckee reported a hard thud which briefly jiggled the house. Another in Incline reported very, very brief shaking, causing the walls and windows to rattle.

    Brief Background
    The number of earthquake in this area has increased in recent years, most of which have followed a
    M4.9 earthquake on October 30, 1998 (See a list of events from 1994-present, NCSN). Today's M3.3 temblor was centered about four miles to the north and was probably not an aftershock to that event.
