SOUTHERN PERU, JULY 22, 2001 (Seismo-Watch) -- A strong earthquake measuring Ms 7.2 (NEIC), Mw 7.6 (Harvard)occurred 09:38:43 UTC (4:38 a.m. local time), July 7, along the coast of south-central Peru. It was an aftershock to the powerful M8.3 earthquake that stuck on June 23, killing over 150 people and causing widespread damage.

The quake was centered along the Peruvian coast about 510 miles southeast of Lima, 70 miles west-southwest of Arepuipa, and just off the coast of the former town of Camana.

The focal depth was placed at 19.5 km beneath the surface and the Harvard fault plane solution suggested thrust motion along a north-northwest trending plane.

Preliminary reports from the region indicate the quake shook the coast quite hard, toppling some previously damaged buildings. It was sharply felt at Arepuipa where people bolted from their homes. There has been no reports of injuries at this time.

It was the largest aftershock to strike the region since the first couple of hour of the main M8.3 temblor on June 23. It matched a similar magnitude event just a little over three hours of the main shock. See a list of aftershocks.
