    PALM SPRINGS, CALIFORNIA, May 23, 2001 (Seismo-Watch) -- Preliminary data indicates that an earthquake measuring M3.8 (SCSN) occurred at 19:10:34 UTC (12:10 p.m. local time), May 23 about 19 miles northwest of Palm Springs and 7 miles north-northeast of Cabazon in the foothills to the San Bernardino Mountains.

    The epicenter occurred close to the Riverside-San Bernardino County line in the upper reaches of Millard Canyon drainage, near Bear Wallow Springs (See a TopoZone epicenter map). The focal point was placed at a depth of 14.1 km (8.8 miles) and we do not have a fault plane solution for the event as of yet. The quake was centered about a miles south of the Mission Creek segment of the San Andreas Fault.

    Preliminary reports indicate the quake was felt many people in the Inland Empire, including but is was centered too far from shore to cause items to topple from tables or shelves. (See USGS Felt Intensity Map)

    There were no foreshocks and there have been a few small aftershocks since the posting of this report, the largest of which registered M2.5 at 12:32 p.m. aftershocks recorded at this time.

    On February 10, 2001, a M5.1 earthquake struck the San Bernardino Mountains near Big Bear Lake. Today's M3.8 quake was not an affershock to that event as tt was centered about 22 miles away. (See Seismo-Watch Special Earthquake Report).
