SAN SIMEON, CALIFORNIA, May 14, 2001 (Seismo-Watch) -- Preliminary data indicates that an earthquake measuring M3.9 (NCSN) occurred at 02:39:51, May 15 UTC (7:40 p.m., May 14, local time), May 14 about 9 miles northwest of San Simeon in the San Lucia Range near Hearst Castle.

The earthquake was centered a couple miles northwest of Hearst Castle in the upper reaches of Burnett Creek (See a TopoZone Map). The focal depth was placed at 5.3 km (4.2 miles) and US Geological Survey has reported a focal mechanism showing normal-slip motion along a northwest trending plane.

There were no foreshocks and only one small M1.7 aftershock was recorded about an hour after the main jolt.

Preliminary reports indicate the quake was sharply felt from San Simeon to Cambria and inland to Parkfield, and as far south as San Luis Obispo. There have been no reports of items toppling from tables and shelves. Residents in the area said that they heard a loud noise followed by a couple sharp jolts. Homes creaked, hanging plants swung slightly and glassware jiggled.

Small tremors occur in this area on a monthly basis and occasionally a moderate jolt shakes the region. The largest historic earthquake here occurred on November 11, 1952, and measured M6.0. It struck about five miles north of today's epicenter.
